This 9.25x7.25” micro-mosaic landscape was inspired by a misty desert sunrise in the summer of 2007, after one of Arizona’s spectacular thunderstorms over the Sonoran Desert south of my studio. I wanted to capture the mesquite and paloverde trees as they stood reflected in shimmering platinum pools of rainwater. I’ve been refining my mosaic technique for eleven years now. It starts with a handpainted image on smooth gesso covered wood or MDF panel. After sealing the painting, I adhere crystal-clear 1mm glass spheres to the painting, add a tinted acrylic filler, and grind off the outer surface when dry. This produces a Pointillist or lens effect, as the image transmits up through the tiny dots of crystal. I finish with an environmentally-friendly glaze. Some pieces are bordered with hand-set glass bead mosaic strips on the front or sides. Other mosaics run completely out to the edge of the board, for a more contemporary look inspired by cast glass. ‘Dawn After Rain 1 and 2’ are professionally framed in genuine abalone shell liner with coral painted rims, and a platinum, pale gold, and dark red wood frame with brown paper and hanging hardware on back.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
