For centuries, the maasai have used colour to visually represent their culture, and the maasai women adopted glass beads to create patterns on ornaments which can tell you where one is from depending on how colourful they are. Likewise in this work, I introduce colour and partially destroy the figurative graphite sketch underneath with charcoal and pastel by building on it a symmetrical structure, in an attempt to uncover a hidden personal identity.

Currently working from the Kobo Trust Studios in Nairobi, I am curious about the public spaces and the dynamics of human conduct, as there remains unanswered questions about actions and observable emotions associated with cultures, particular societies, as well as the human race as a whole. Using charcoal, pastel, graphite, ink, watercolour, and sometimes newsprint, my work represents these common spaces, using human figures and ideas on truth as I have observed and experienced, mostly speaking to issues of traditions and culture in the society.
