Gazing into the darkness of the night through the indistinct shadows of the branches that grow outside my windows, I thought about all those who have lost the ability to behold a familiar view from the windows of their homes. What used to seem so ordinary and sometimes even mundane in peacetime is now a precious gift, one that we owe to all those who protect us as our country has been engulfed in war for the past 9 years. The depicted view of the night sky is simple and naive, yet restless. It is unclear exactly where this landscape takes place – in the woods or beneath the windows of a high-rise building. There is something unsettling and whimsical in the black branches that ominously peer at us from the dark rectangle of the window. The overcast, sprawling sky carries a threat – at any moment, it may give birth to a deadly missile launched by the russians toward us. The ability to peacefully gaze at the sky is yet another thing that the war has taken from me. But the belief in Victory is not lost. The yellow crescent of the moon flickers in the darkness of the sky, much like my unquenchable hope.
