Samoa is just a little bit difficult to visit. I mean it's not too hard to get there, but culturally it is still a tribal village and not easy to penetrate. I was fortunate to be working on a movie there, and we hired some of the local guys to help us out. I was there a month or so and really got to know our fellow crew members in a way just not possible otherwise. We were of course Big Time Hollywood Players, flopping with exhaustion at the end of our big time day. And our local guys, who actually did the heavy lifting for us, went off at the end of the day to play rugby. These guys are sturdy! On my busman's holiday day off, I always went wandering with my Fuji 6x9 "TexasLeica" camera hoping to capture lightning in a bottle. Well, it was at least raining, and I sure had a good time making this snap. No time for anything fussy, these guys were popcorn in a hot kettle! Robert Louis Stevenson spent his final years here, and there is a museum to him in Apia. One of our crew members, Clements was a sculptor who had some of his work on display at the museum. Our location manager recruited Clements at a night club where he worked on occasion as a bouncer. Dunno what kind of bouncer Clements was, he giggled a lot. I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
