Subject: The painting showcases La Farola de Málaga, designed by naval engineer Joaquín María Pery y Guzmán in 1817 at the mouth of the port of Málaga guiding boats to harbor for more than 100 years. As a result of redevelopment it now stands in the heart of the tourist port, flanked by Malagueta beach, the Real Club Mediterráneo yacht club, the cruise ship dock, and Pier Uno the retail promenade. The Alcazaba of Málaga, originally built as a palace fortress and now one of the largest tourist attractions in the city, is represented in the background. Description: This painting’s seemingly touristy subject matter belies the depth of the subject which captures nearly the entire history and cultural mutability of Málaga in a single composition. In the background, the Alcazaba’s strong cubic forms stand above the city, and are visually echoed by the material of the modern breakwater. In the midground, the lighthouse is rendered in stark white, a testament to its historic importance to the port but now reading as mere decoration amidst the palm trees and beach promenade. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
