"Heritage" 2020, Havana, Cuba 42in x 62in Yosbany Milanés is a descendant of Haitian migrants who moved to Cuba at the beginning of the last century, mostly to work on the Sugarcane fields. From the beginning, Cuban society has always been very mixed. Yosbany is the epitome of the Cuban/Haitian peasant farmer. I met him during a visit to the municipality of Palma Soriano in Santiago de Cuba. In this town I have worked on a few occasions because it is very rich in Afro-Cuban traditions. "Papito", as his family and friends call him, founded a cultural project called ENEGRO in the 1990s. ENEGRO's aim is to salvage the Franco-Haitian culture in Cuba. The presence of the Milanés family in the folkloric festivals of the province of Santiago de Cuba has for generations been fundamental to its tradition. They are an integral part of the heritage and cultural identity of an important region in Cuba.
